Ivan Brkljacic, DMA / Professor in the artistic field of Composition – compositional-technical disciplines

Ivan Brkljačić was born in 1977 in Belgrade. He graduated in 2001 from the Faculty of Music, Department of composition and orchestration, in the class of Professor Srdjan Hofman. He obtained his Master Degree in composition at the same faculty in 2005, in the class of Professor Zoran Erić and in 2012 successfully defended his doctoral art project entitled Istar – Cycle of Nascent Music Caricatures for the Performing in a Theater Scenery, mentored by Prof. Srdjan Hofman.

Ivan Brkljačić’s compositions have been performed many times in Belgrade and other towns in Serbia. Among others a few performances have stood out: 1) The premiere of Piano concerto IT! at the Kolarac Hall, with Aleksandar Šandorov, Bojan Suđić and the Symphony Orchestra of RTS; 2) Premiere of the instrumental theater Istar in the open space of Nebojša Tower at Kalemegdan; 3) Premiere of Saxophone concerto LOVE! with Milan Savić, Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra and conductor Daniel Raiskin 4) Performance of the piece Pulsation of the Long-forgotten watch interpreted by conductor Felix Mildenberger, as part of the celebration of the centenary of the Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra; 5) Authors concert held in Students Cultural Centre (2016), National Thetare in Belgrade (2023), Slaveski Legacy (2024), Kolarac Hall (2024) and City Museum Residence (2025). Also, his compositions were performed in 23 European countries, USA, Canada, Brazil, Argentina, Japan, China (with Hong Kong), Russia and Australia. He wrote commissioned compositions for Belgrade Philharmonic Orchestra, choir Collegium Musicum, European project MUSMA, festivals Bemus, Belef, Saxpirience, Piccolo weekend, Slovenian ensembles Slavko Osterc and 4Saxess, trio Pokret (Movement), trio Tembr, quartet Mokranjac, trio Singidunum, Construction Site New Music Ensemble, trio Donne di Belgrado, St. George Strings, etc. He cooperated with international ensembles such as Ostravská Banda from the Czech Republic, Blindman from Belgium, L’Ensemble Portmanto from Canada, Modern Music Ensеmble from Australia, etc.

Ivan Brkljačić, primarily through collaboration with director Alisa Stojanović, composed music for over forty theater plays, staged at Atelje 212, Belgrade Drama Theatre, Yugoslav Drama Theatre, The National Theatre, Bitef Theatre, etc.
Brkljačić is the author of music for the feature film Redemption Street (Ustanička ulica), directed by Miroslav Terzić and TV series V (Fau) Effect, co-directed by Đorđe Marković and Gordan Kičić. In his opus, Brkljačić also has an atypical example of applied music, composed for the book, titled Brighten Up of the Sun by Saša Jovančević.

From 1999 he was employed as a teacher of the Music form analysis in the Secondary Music School Mokranjac in Belgrade. From the academic year 2005/06 he worked at the Faculty of Music in Belgrade. Firstly at the Department for Music Theory and then at the Department of Composition (currently works in the following subjects: Music form analysis, Arranging and Teaching Methods of Music form). In the period from 2015-2024, he acted as the vice-dean for teaching at the Faculty of Music.

He has given professional lectures and lectures on his music in Warsaw and Wroclaw (Poland), Vigo (Spain), Buenos Aires (Argentina), East Sarajevo (BiH) and at the universities in Serbia (Niš, Novi Sad and Belgrade).

As a result of decades of work in pedagogy, a textbook entitled From Music Flow to Music Form was created by Brkljačić. It was published in Belgrade in 2022.

He acted as the selector of the program for the contemporary music festival International Review of Composers (Belgrade, 2007-2015).

He served in official bodies and committees of the Composers’ Association of Serbia and Sokoj, which he previously represented in the country and abroad.

He has been granted the following awards:

  • Mokranjac Prize for the year 2005, for his composition When the Curtain Rises SEVEN Times, for symphony orchestra
  • 41st Sofest festival statuette (2012) for the best originally composed music, for the film Redemption Street
  • The annual award of the magazine Muzika klasika (Musica Classica) for 2012 in the category of Applied Music (for the film Redemption Street)
  • Letter of appreciation from the Faculty of Music (2024)
  • Letter of appreciation from the Composers’Association of Serbia (2025)
