Scientific Research Projects
At the Faculty of Music, the diversity and breadth of research directions in the fields of music, the arts, and the humanities are highly valued, and the development of high-quality and original scholarly contributions is strongly encouraged. For all these reasons, research in music and interdisciplinary studies places our institution among the leading ones in the region and beyond. The current accreditation for conducting scientific research activities was granted to the Faculty in March 2016 by the Committee for Accreditation of Scientific Research Organizations of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development of the Republic of Serbia, which also funds the research work of scholars at the Faculty of Music.
Scientific work at the Faculty of Music has two important aspects: the notable individual engagement of all researchers and a clear focus on specific areas of study. One of the Faculty’s strategic goals is to support the research efforts of its staff, which is also achieved through active collaboration with numerous institutions and distinguished individuals from around the world. Many members of the Faculty engaged in research are among the leading scholars and experts in their respective fields. Their scholarly contributions and the originality of their research are reflected in the application of new scientific and methodological approaches. A particular strength is the exploration of new or less-researched areas within doctoral studies in musicology, ethnomusicology, ethnochoreology, music pedagogy, and music theory. Thanks to the academic achievements of its teaching staff and associates, the Faculty of Music has, for decades, maintained a strong reputation within the international academic community.
Research contributions at the Faculty of Music are realized through the implementation of scientific projects, intensive exchange of ideas at conferences and symposia, publication of scholarly articles in journals and other academic outlets, systematic publication of monographs and edited volumes, organization of lectures and workshops, and many other activities.
Scientific research projects at the Faculty of Music are carried out within the framework of five research units: the Department of Musicology, the Department of Ethnomusicology, the Department of Music Theory, the Department of Solfeggio and Music Pedagogy, and the Department of Complementary Scholarly and Professional Disciplines.

The project Female Leadership in Music: Exploring Female Roles, Agency, and Collaborative Musical Practices in a Trans-Genre Context (FLIM) is based on the study of the types, dynamics, and status of female leadership in musical practices outside mainstream culture in Serbia. Since the concept of musical leadership as a specific social activity has not previously been studied within the local academic community—particularly from the perspective of gender regimes—the initial phase of the project is also focused on developing an interdisciplinary theoretical platform. This platform integrates insights on leadership, gender, and femininity from ethnomusicology, anthropology, cultural management, leadership studies, and related fields.
Objectives:
- To examine the current position of women’s music-making and performance across traditional, world music, and popular music scenes;
- To map both highly visible and underrepresented female figures across different music scenes; to identify and describe opportunities, gender-based constraints, and acts of transgression that together shape the complex dynamics of women’s participation in popular music in relation to shifts in dominant gender ideologies in Serbia;
- To conduct a critical analysis of gender issues in contemporary music creation and performance through case studies, with the aim of facilitating and supporting the ongoing engagement(s) of women musicians across diverse musical cultures in Serbia;
- To highlight the relationship between the personal narratives and experiences of women musicians and social institutions, contemporary gender debates, as well as the demands of the music market and public policies.
The first quarter of the project implementation has already been completed. The research team conducted extensive fieldwork and collected valuable audio and video materials, forming a database for further scholarly analysis and the foundation for a future archive intended for the broader public.
