Her piano technique is grounded in the Russian school. At the age of 19, she completed her Bachelor’s degree at the Belgrade Conservatory of Music, in the class of the renowned Russian professor Igor Lazko, who also taught at the Paris Conservatory.
At 22, she obtained two Master’s degrees from the Moscow “Tchaikovsky” Conservatory, studying with Jurij Stjepanovich Shlesarev and Arbo Valdma, an Estonian pianist who was also a professor in Cologne. During that period, she collaborated with many great artists such as Evgeny Yakovlevich Lieberman, Elena Richter, Voskresensky, and Dorensky.

She has recorded seven CDs — two of them for PGP RTS, the most important recording studio in the former Yugoslavia, some for the Greek Union of Composers, and others in New Zealand. One of the CDs recorded in New Zealand features the music of John Psathas, the country’s most prominent composer, who wrote the music for the opening ceremony of the Athens Olympic Games.
Many contemporary composers have dedicated their works to Sonja, including Swedish composer Ulof Guldberg, Canadian Michael Matthews, and Norwegian Vidar Hansen.
Sonja also founded her own music festival on the island of Hvar in Croatia, where she served as artistic director and hosted musicians from all around the world.
