Marija Karan, PhD
Marija M. Karan, PhD completed her doctorate at the Interdisciplinary Studies of the University of Arts in Belgrade, study program Theory of Arts and Media. Her doctoral dissertation entitled The Musical Conception of Radio Discourse versus the Audience – Forms of Transformation of Mutual Relations Viewed within the Interdisciplinary Field of Media Theory explored the dynamic relationship between radio discourse and its audiences within a broad interdisciplinary framework.
She has been continuously active in academic circles, participating in scientific conferences and publishing research in the field of art and (mass) media theory in proceedings and monographs from both national and international conferences, as well as in journals of national and international relevance.
Between 2019 and 2024, she was a teaching associate at the Interdisciplinary Master’s Studies Theory of Arts and Media at the University of Arts in Belgrade, where she taught the compulsory course Introduction to Media Theories.
Her professional career spans decades in mass media, the cultural industries, music management and public relations. She has worked as a music editor and supervisor for film and television projects, music director, editor, and program author on various radio stations, editor and program moderator for cultural institutions (Music Youth of Belgrade), columnist for regional online music platforms (Headliner.rs), spokesperson for prominent festivals and organizations (International Harp Festival, Bassomania, Musicology Sessions, CEBEF, ARSFID Project), as well as music and media consultant (MMK Music & Media).
Marija Karan is the author of the podcast Ars Femina Identitas, developed within the ARSFID Project “History and Identity of Female Artists in Serbian Modern Art – Creating Sources for Scientific and Artistic Transposition.” This podcast, produced in cooperation with Agleast Production, is the first of its kind on the Serbian media market entirely dedicated to contemporary Serbian women artists.
